Caprica cuenta cómo dos familias – los Graystone y los Adama- evolucionan, rivalizan y prosperan en el efervescente mundo de las 12 Colonias, una sociedad ficticia que sin embargo tiene infinitos puntos en común con el panorama actual en el mundo. El escenario en el que se mueven es el de la incipiente aparición de la inteligencia artificial como una realidad plasmada en los Cylon, máquinas perfectas capaces de albergar un alma humana. La serie mezcla acción con espionaje industrial y guerra de sexos, pero también fanatismo religioso y conflictos éticos relacionados con avances científicos.
